CO2 Refrigeration Systems Presented at FMI Energy Conference

Mr. Singh joins executives from Target, Sobeys and Fresh & Easy to discuss end user experience with CO2 based refrigeration system.

Maple Grove, MN: Grocery retailers can reduce energy cost and help protect the global environment by operating refrigeration systems that use carbon dioxide (CO2) rather than more commonly used refrigerants. This will be the topic of a presentation at the FMI Energy and Store Development Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 12.

In contrast to CO2 systems, most other refrigeration systems appear much more likely to increase the risk of global climate change by releasing chemicals that tend to trap heat within earth’s atmosphere.

The presentation at FMI will include Abtar Singh, President of Singh360 Inc., and executives from Target Corporation, Sobey’s Inc., and Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market. Participating speakers will discuss their experience with CO2-based refrigeration systems.

Specifically, Singh will discuss the latest trends in the use of CO2 refrigeration in North American supermarkets.

“Supermarkets have been using a class of refrigerants known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFC’s). The problem is, these HFC’s have very high global-warming potential (or GWP). These days the industry is more inclined to use refrigerants with a lower GWP. CO2 is a natural refrigerant and also has one of the lowest GWP. For these reasons CO2 is becoming an obvious choice in the industry,” Singh said. “Although CO2 systems are widely used in Europe and Australia, supermarkets in the States are in the early stages of adoption. Many retailers have questions about their use, cost and maintenance.”

Singh will co-present on a panel with Paul Anderson, Group Manager – Engineering, Target Corporation, Rod Peterson, National Procurement Manager of Sobeys Inc., and Tom Hutchinson, Energy Consultant for Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market.
